# Crosspost in Facebook Groups: What It Means and How to Do It

“Crossposted” means one post or listing went to several groups. What Facebook allows in 2026 (listings: up to 20 groups) and how to crosspost any post safely.

Direct Answer

“Crossposted” means one post went out in several places instead of being written for each. In Facebook groups it usually marks a listing the seller sent to other buy-and-sell groups — up to 20 at once. Regular posts have no crosspost button in 2026: you post in each group by hand, or a Chrome extension does it for you.

Key takeaways

- “Crossposted” (or “x-posted”) means the same content was published in several groups or Pages instead of being written for each one.
- Facebook’s only built-in way to crosspost to groups is for sellers: one buy-and-sell listing can go to up to 20 groups.
- Regular posts have no crosspost button: post group by group (about 90 seconds each), share to one group per pass, or let an extension post to every group on your list.
- On Pages, crossposting is a video feature between Pages; one update to several Pages and Instagram is a job for Meta Business Suite. Neither reaches groups you joined.
- Buffer, Hootsuite and Zapier lost group publishing on April 22, 2024. Crossposts get flagged for identical text and fast bursts, so vary the wording and space the posts out.

## What does “crossposted” mean in a Facebook group?

To crosspost is to publish the same content in more than one place instead of writing it again for each. When a post in a Facebook group says “crossposted” — or the shorthand “x-posted” — the author put the same post in other groups too. Most of the time it is a seller: the item is listed in several buy-and-sell groups, so the first person to say “interested” in this group may not be the first one overall.

On Facebook the word covers five different situations:

| Where you see it | What it means |
| --- | --- |
| A listing in a buy-and-sell group | The seller published the same listing in other groups — with Facebook’s own listing form, up to 20 at once |
| A regular post in a group | The same text was posted separately in several groups, by hand or with a tool |
| A group rule: “no crossposting” | The admins don’t want posts that are also running in other groups, or the same post repeated |
| A video on a Facebook Page | Another Page reused the video through Facebook’s crossposting feature for Pages |
| A post that came from Instagram | It was shared to Facebook automatically from the linked Instagram account |

The term also has a history that explains a lot of confused searches. In October 2021 Facebook tested a prompt that appeared after you posted in a group — “You can cross-post this post to more groups” — with a link to pick the groups. The test never became a feature. In 2026 there is no crosspost button for regular group posts, on a computer or in the app.

If what you want is to push out a post that already exists rather than compose a new one, that is a different action with different reach: [how to repost in Facebook groups](https://multiplegroupposter.com/blog/how-to-repost-in-facebook-groups/).

## How to crosspost in Facebook groups: the options compared

| Method | Reaches the groups you joined? | Your time for 50 groups | A different version per group? | Cost |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Buy-and-sell listing (built in) | Only groups that take listings, 20 at most | Not possible past 20 | No — one listing | Free |
| By hand (copy, adapt, post) | Yes | About 90–120 minutes | Only if you rewrite each one | Free |
| Share button | Groups that accept shares, one per pass | About 50 minutes | No — it’s the original post | Free |
| Cloud scheduler (Buffer, Hootsuite) | **No** — Pages only since April 2024 | — | — | $15–100+/month |
| Chrome extension ([MultiGroupPoster](https://multiplegroupposter.com/facebook-auto-poster/)) | **Yes** | A few minutes of setup; the run continues for a few hours on its own | Yes, with Spintax | 6 free posts, then $9.99/month |

Selling one item? Use the listing form. A handful of groups? By hand is fine. Fifty groups every week is what an extension is for.

## The built-in crosspost: one listing in up to 20 groups

Facebook’s only native crossposting to groups is for selling. In a group set up for buying and selling, the post box has a **Sell Something** button, and its listing form can publish the same listing in your other buy-and-sell groups:

1. In a buy-and-sell group, click **Sell Something** and choose what you are selling: an item, a vehicle, or a home for sale or rent.
2. Add the photos, title, price, description and location, then click **Next**.
3. Tick the other groups that should get the listing — up to **20 per listing** as of October 2026. Marketplace is optional.
4. Click **Publish**. The listing goes to every group you ticked; groups with admin approval show it once it is approved.

Three habits keep a crossposted listing from annoying anyone:

- **Say it’s crossposted.** A line such as “Also listed in other local groups” tells buyers that someone elsewhere may claim it first.
- **Check each group’s rules.** Some buy-and-sell groups ban crossposting or limit how often the same item can be listed; those groups belong off your list.
- **Close it everywhere.** Once the item is gone, mark it sold or delete it in every group it went to, so nobody keeps messaging you about it.

Two limits remain: the form lists only groups that accept listings, and it works for listings only. To reach more than 20 groups, or groups that take regular posts, you need method 1 or method 3 below.

If your list mixes buy and sell groups with ordinary ones, [posting one listing in multiple buy and sell groups](https://multiplegroupposter.com/blog/post-in-multiple-buy-and-sell-groups/) shows how to send the listing and the regular post in the same run.

## Method 1: Crosspost by hand

Open each group, paste your post, change the first line, attach the photo, click **Post**, repeat. It works in any group you can post in, costs nothing, and looks natural because it *is* natural. The cost is time and consistency: 50 groups take roughly two hours, and by group 30 most people are rushing, skipping groups or pasting identical text — which is both tedious and a mild spam signal. Fine for five groups. Painful at fifty.

Two habits make it bearable: keep three or four opening lines in a note and rotate them, and where a group allows links, put yours in the first comment rather than in the post.

![A row of clay cups filled neatly at first, then half-filled and tipped over — manual crossposting gets sloppy by group 30](https://multiplegroupposter.com/blog/how-to-crosspost-on-facebook-groups/inline-1.webp)

On a phone the routine is the same, one group at a time: the Facebook app has no multi-group option for regular posts, and Chrome extensions don’t run in phone browsers.

## Method 2: Cloud schedulers (and why they can’t reach your groups)

[Buffer](https://multiplegroupposter.com/compare/buffer/), [Hootsuite](https://multiplegroupposter.com/compare/hootsuite/), Later and Sprout Social are excellent at scheduling to Facebook **Pages**. For groups they hit a wall: Meta removed the `publish_to_groups` API permission on April 22, 2024, and that permission never covered groups you merely joined. So can Hootsuite post to Facebook groups? Not since that date — and neither can Buffer, Later or Sprout Social.

Automation platforms went the same way. Zapier removed its Facebook Groups app on the same day and Make retired its Facebook Groups module that year; [Facebook groups integration](https://multiplegroupposter.com/blog/facebook-groups-integration/) lists what still connects. If you are a regular member of 50 buyer groups, these tools have nothing to post to: they run on servers outside your login session, so they cannot act as you inside a group. For crossposting to joined groups they are a non-starter — see [extension vs. desktop and cloud tools](https://multiplegroupposter.com/blog/facebook-group-bulk-poster-extension-vs-desktop/) for the full comparison.

## Method 3: A Chrome extension (the real crosspost)

A browser extension sidesteps the API problem. It runs inside your own Chrome, signed in to your own Facebook account, and posts to each group you select — in any group you are a member of and allowed to post in, admin or not.

With [MultiGroupPoster](https://multiplegroupposter.com/facebook-auto-poster/), a crosspost takes four steps:

1. **Pick the groups.** Tick one or more saved lists in the group selector, or open **Setup List** → **Choose from list** to pick single groups. **Sync with Facebook** builds a list from the groups you have joined.
2. **Write the post once.** Select a phrase and click **Spintax** to give it alternatives, so each group gets its own version — `{Hey everyone|Hi all|Quick heads up}` instead of one identical paragraph. The [Spintax guide](https://multiplegroupposter.com/blog/facebook-group-spintax-guide/) shows how far one template goes. Add photos and, if you like, a first comment.
3. **Set the pace.** By default the extension pauses a random 3–6 minutes after every 1–3 posts; **Time Spacing** under **Protection** sets your own rhythm. **Fast** sends the posts through Facebook in the background; **Safe** opens Facebook and posts on screen, like a person.
4. **Publish.** Click **Publish Now** or **Set Schedule**, then read the result: every group lands in **Successful Posts**, **Pending Approval** or **Failed Posts**, with the reason.

One post, several saved lists: tick them and the extension works through every group in them.

![MultiGroupPoster run in progress: 4 of 8 groups done and a pacing pause counting down to the next group](https://multiplegroupposter.com/images/app/howto/en/progress-running.webp)

The run works through your groups by itself, with a pacing pause before each next post.

The result: a two-hour manual job becomes a few minutes of your attention, the run goes on in the background for a few hours, and every group sees its own version. The full walkthrough, with timings for 50 groups, is in [how to post to multiple Facebook groups](https://multiplegroupposter.com/blog/how-to-post-to-multiple-facebook-groups/). Crossposts can also be timed to each group’s peak hour with a [Facebook group post scheduler](https://multiplegroupposter.com/facebook-post-scheduler/).

## Crossposting on Facebook Pages and Instagram

Pages have their own, official meaning of crosspost, and it is behind most of the confusion. Three cases:

**The same update on several Pages you manage.** In Meta Business Suite, create a post, tick each Page — and any Instagram account — in the composer, and publish or schedule it to all of them at once. It is free, and it is the right tool when the destinations are Pages, not groups.

**One Page’s video on another Page.** This is Facebook’s crossposting feature in the strict sense. Two Pages set up a crossposting relationship — each adds the other in its crossposting settings, a step you skip if you are an admin or editor of both — and after that either Page can publish a video the other uploaded, as its own post, without uploading it again. Views from every post of that video are counted together, and live videos can be crossposted too.

**Instagram to Facebook.** In Accounts Center, sharing across profiles can post your Instagram posts, reels and stories to Facebook automatically. That is crossposting between apps, and it lands on your profile or Page.

None of the three reaches the groups you have joined. To crosspost from one Page to another, use the relationship; for groups, go back to the methods above.

For the Page side in detail, see [how to post to multiple Facebook Pages at once](https://multiplegroupposter.com/blog/post-to-multiple-facebook-pages/). For Instagram content in groups, see [how to share an Instagram post to a Facebook group](https://multiplegroupposter.com/blog/share-instagram-post-to-facebook-group/).

## What to crosspost (and what to keep group-specific)

Crossposting multiplies a post; it doesn’t improve it. Some content travels well across many groups, some belongs to one community:

- **Crosspost well:** product launches, limited-time offers, events, broadly useful tips, surveys and job openings — messages that land the same way in every group.
- **Keep group-specific:** replies to a particular thread, hyper-local references, and anything that names one group’s members or rules. These read as out of place when fanned out.

A smart pattern is to crosspost the core message with Spintax variation, then add a tailored comment in your highest-value groups. You get the reach of a crosspost and the relevance of a native post where it matters most. For timing, pair it with [the best time to post in Facebook groups](https://multiplegroupposter.com/blog/best-time-to-post-in-facebook-groups/).

### When a group says “no crossposting”

Many groups write it into their rules. It means the admins want posts written for their members, not content that is also running in a dozen other groups — and in buy-and-sell groups it often means the same item can’t be listed elsewhere at the same time. Some admins enforce it through post approval, which is why a crossposted post can wait days for a decision. Take those groups off your crosspost list rather than testing the rule: a removed post is lost reach, and repeated removals can get you muted or removed from the group.

## Crossposting as a Page vs. your profile

Can you crosspost *as your business Page* instead of your personal profile? It depends on each group. Admins decide whether Pages can post; where they can, you switch your posting identity to the Page and the post carries your brand name and logo. Where they can’t — which is most groups — you post as yourself.

MultiGroupPoster sets that identity once per run under **Posting as**, so a brand crosspost doesn’t mean 50 manual identity switches. Groups that accept posts only from people come back as failed, with that reason. When it is allowed, and how to do it at scale, is in [how to post in a Facebook group as a Page](https://multiplegroupposter.com/blog/how-to-post-in-facebook-group-as-a-page/).

## Crossposting without tripping spam filters

Crossposting is the activity Facebook’s anti-spam systems watch most closely, because it is also what spammers do. The difference between a marketer and a spammer is in the execution:

- **Pace it.** A sensible ceiling is **50–100 groups a day** for accounts older than 12 months, around **40** at 6–12 months, and **under 40** for new accounts — under 20 in the first weeks. Keep the pauses random, never a fixed interval.
- **Vary the content.** Identical text in 50 groups is the clearest automation signal. A 3×3×3 Spintax template gives 27 versions.
- **Attach media.** A photo, video or link preview reads as more natural than text alone.
- **Don’t double up.** The same post twice in one group, hours apart, is a quick way to get it removed.
- **Respect group rules.** If a group bans promotion or crossposting, leave it out. No tool should get around that.

MultiGroupPoster adds a quick check before a big run. It looks at how many groups, how fast and how varied the text is, suggests a one-click fix such as **Set spacing to 5 min** or **Open Variations**, and warns you when some groups already got a post in the last 2 hours. It is advice, not a block: **Post anyway** always goes ahead.

![MultiGroupPoster quick check before a 64-group run: pace it a little slower, same text to 64 groups and same comment in 64 groups, each with a one-click fix](https://multiplegroupposter.com/images/app/howto/en/preflight.webp)

The check before a big crosspost: pacing, identical text and identical comments, each with a fix.

## FAQ

### What does crossposted mean in a Facebook group?

It means the same post was published in other groups too, instead of being written for this one. On a buy-and-sell listing it usually means the seller sent the listing to several groups at once — Facebook’s listing form allows up to 20 — so the item may be claimed elsewhere first. Sellers often write “x-posted” for the same thing.

### What does crossposting mean on a Facebook Page?

On Pages, crossposting is an official video feature. Pages with a crossposting relationship, or Pages run by the same admin or editor, can publish each other’s videos as their own posts without uploading them again, and the views are counted together. It has nothing to do with groups.

### How do you crosspost in Facebook groups?

For a buy-and-sell listing, tick up to 20 groups in Facebook’s listing form. For a regular post, publish it in each group yourself — about 90 seconds a group — or use a Chrome extension such as MultiGroupPoster, which posts one message to every group on your list with a different wording per group and a pause between posts.

### Is there a crosspost button for regular posts in groups?

No. As of October 2026 the group composer posts to one group, and Share takes one group per pass. Facebook tested a prompt to cross-post a group post to more groups in October 2021 but never launched it, which is why older guides mention an option you won’t find.

### How many groups can I crosspost a listing to?

Up to 20 groups per listing, picked from the buy-and-sell groups you belong to; Marketplace is optional. To reach more groups, or groups that only accept regular posts, publish the offer as a normal post with photos and a price in each group.

### How do I crosspost from one Facebook Page to another?

For a video, set up a crossposting relationship between the two Pages — each Page adds the other in its crossposting settings, a step you skip if you are an admin or editor of both — and then publish the video from the second Page without uploading it again. For any other post, use Meta Business Suite: tick both Pages in the composer and publish or schedule once.

### Can Hootsuite or Buffer crosspost to Facebook groups?

No. Since Meta removed group publishing from its API on April 22, 2024, Hootsuite, Buffer, Later, Sprout Social and Zapier reach Facebook Pages only. To crosspost to groups you joined, you need a tool that runs in your own logged-in browser. More in [auto post to groups you joined](https://multiplegroupposter.com/blog/auto-post-to-facebook-groups-you-joined/).

### Can I crosspost on Facebook from my phone?

Not regular posts: the Facebook app has no multi-group option, so on a phone you post in one group at a time, and phone browsers do not run Chrome extensions. Crossposting one post to many groups needs a computer with Chrome, Edge or Brave.

### Is crossposting allowed in Facebook groups?

Posting in groups you belong to is allowed, and so is posting the same offer in several of them. What gets posts removed or accounts limited is spam behavior: identical text, posts seconds apart and ignored group rules. Leave out groups whose rules say “no crossposting”, vary the wording and space the posts out.

### What is the difference between crossposting and sharing?

A share puts the original post into a group as a card that shows the author’s name, and some groups turn shares away. A crosspost is a new post in each group — your own text and photos, published natively — which members and admins treat like any other post.
