Quick answer

A Facebook group can have up to **10 rules**, added under Group Rules in the admin menu. Good rules name a behaviour a moderator can see, such as “promotion only in the Friday thread” or “every listing shows a price”, plus what happens when someone breaks it. Most groups need five to seven. Copy and adapt the templates below.

Key takeaways

- Facebook allows up to 10 rules per group, each with a title and a description. Use five to seven.
- Write behaviour, not values: "no insults aimed at members" can be enforced, "be kind" can't.
- State the consequence in the rule, so removals feel fair rather than personal.
- Make rules impossible to miss: new member intro, a membership question, a pinned post, and the rule named on every removal.
- This page is the admin's side. If you are a member trying to promote inside other people's rules, read our promotion rules guide instead.

## How to add rules to a Facebook group

Meta’s Help Center (checked 15 October 2026) describes it like this:

1. Go to facebook.com/groups and select your group.
2. Click **Group Rules** in the left menu.
3. Click **Get Started**, then add from Facebook’s example rules or write your own.
4. Click **Create**.
5. Drag the handle next to a rule to change the order.

To change one later, click **Options** next to the rule and choose **Edit rule** or **Delete rule**. You can have up to 10. Each rule has a short title, which is what members see in lists and on removals, and a description where you explain it.

If you are setting up a new group, do this before you invite anyone: the first members set the culture, and they should join a group whose rules already exist. The rest of the setup is in [how to create a Facebook group](https://multiplegroupposter.com/blog/how-to-create-a-facebook-group/).

## What makes a rule enforceable

A rule is a promise from the admins about what will happen. Three checks:

- **Can a moderator see it?** “No posts without a price” is visible. “Be genuine” isn’t.
- **Would two moderators make the same call?** If not, the wording is too vague.
- **Does it say what happens?** “Posts without a price are removed” teaches more than “please add a price”.

A useful format for the description: *what is not allowed, why, and what happens*. For example: **No promotion outside the Friday thread.** Offers and links in the main feed are removed so the group stays useful. Share them in the pinned Friday thread instead. Repeat posts lead to a 7-day suspension.

## Ten core rules almost every group needs

Pick the five to seven that fit, then add one or two from the templates for your type of group.

1. **Be respectful.** Disagree with ideas, not people. Insults, slurs and personal attacks are removed, and repeat offenders are removed from the group.
2. **Stay on topic.** Posts must be about [topic]. Off-topic posts are declined with a pointer to a better place.
3. **No spam or link-drops.** Posts that are only a link, or the same post repeated, are removed.
4. **Promotion only in the [day] thread.** See the pinned thread. Promotion elsewhere is removed.
5. **No unsolicited DMs.** Don’t message members to sell, recruit or pitch. Report it to the admins if it happens to you.
6. **Respect privacy.** What members share here stays here. No screenshots of members’ posts outside the group.
7. **Search before you post.** Common questions have answers in the guides and featured posts.
8. **No hate speech or bullying.** Zero tolerance. Immediate removal from the group.
9. **Disclose your interest.** If you sell or work for what you recommend, say so.
10. **Admins have the final word, and explain it.** Questions about a removal go to the admins by message, not in a public post.

## Facebook group rule templates by group type

### Local and neighbourhood groups

1. **Local posts only.** Posts must be about [Town or area]. National news belongs elsewhere.
2. **No fear-mongering.** Crime and safety posts need a date, place and source. Rumours are removed.
3. **Lost and found: update your post.** Comment “found” or delete it when the pet or item is home.
4. **Recommendations welcome, self-promotion on [day].** Members can recommend businesses any time; owners promote on [day].
5. **No naming and shaming.** Don’t post private people’s names, faces or plates to accuse them. Report crimes to the police.
6. **Politics only when it is local.** Council decisions yes, national party debates no.

### Buy and sell groups

1. **Price, location and condition in every listing.** Listings without them are removed.
2. **One listing per item per [24 hours / 3 days].** Don’t repost; comment to bump it instead.
3. **Mark it sold.** Edit or delete the post when the item is gone.
4. **Local pickup only in [Area].** No shipping scams.
5. **No pre-payment for items you haven’t seen.** Meet in a public place.
6. **Allowed items follow Facebook’s commerce policies.** No weapons, animals, medicines or other items Facebook bans.
7. **Holds and no-shows.** Three no-shows and you are removed.

### Business, professional and networking groups

1. **Give before you ask.** Answer questions and share what you know; requests for work go in the [day] thread.
2. **No cold pitching in comments.** Replying to a member’s question with your sales pitch is removed.
3. **Job posts need pay and location.** Listings without them are declined.
4. **Cite your numbers.** Claims about results need a source or your own data.
5. **No affiliate links in posts.** Put them in the promo thread with a disclosure.
6. **Introduce yourself once.** Use the weekly introductions thread.

### Hobby, fandom and interest groups

1. **Credit creators.** Name the original artist, photographer or author when you share their work.
2. **Spoiler tags.** Put “Spoiler” and a few blank lines before plot details for [X days] after release.
3. **No gatekeeping.** Beginners’ questions are welcome; mocking them is not.
4. **Sales of [items] on [day] only.**
5. **No AI images posted as your own work.** Label them.

### Support, health and parenting groups

1. **This is peer support, not medical advice.** Talk to a professional about your situation.
2. **What is shared here stays here.** Screenshots outside the group lead to removal.
3. **No selling to members.** No supplements, cures, courses or MLM, including in DMs.
4. **Content warnings.** Start sensitive posts with “CW” and the topic.
5. **Be gentle with advice.** Ask before giving it; share what worked for you rather than what someone should do.
6. **In a crisis, contact local emergency services.** Admins can’t respond around the clock.

### Paid communities, courses and coaching groups

1. **Members only.** Don’t add people who haven’t joined the programme.
2. **No sharing of course materials** outside the group.
3. **Ask in the right thread.** Tech issues in [thread], wins in [thread], questions in the main feed.
4. **Coaches answer within [48 hours] on weekdays.**
5. **No recruiting members** into other programmes.

### Rules for the admins themselves

Members trust rules more when the team follows some too. Pin these in your moderators’ chat:

1. **Remove by rule, not by mood.** Every removal names a rule.
2. **Second opinion before a ban**, except for spam bots and scams.
3. **No promoting our own businesses outside the promo thread.**
4. **Reply to reports within 24 hours.**
5. **Review borderline calls weekly**, so similar cases get the same decision.

## Writing the self-promotion rule

The promotion rule causes more removals than any other, so write it carefully. Three common versions:

| Version | Wording | Works for |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Closed | No promotion of any kind. | Support groups, small private communities |
| Thread or day | Promotion only in the pinned [day] thread. | Most business, local and hobby groups |
| Open with limits | One promotional post per member per week, with a price and no links in the post body. | Buy and sell, marketplace-style groups |

The middle option usually wins: members get a place to share offers, and the main feed stays useful. A recurring post from Admin Assist can publish the thread every week ([Admin Assist setup](https://multiplegroupposter.com/blog/facebook-group-admin-assist/)). The other side of this rule, how members read and follow it, is covered in our guide to [Facebook group promotion rules](https://multiplegroupposter.com/blog/facebook-group-promotion-rules/).

## Making members actually read the rules

- **New member intro.** In **Group settings**, the **New member intro** can include your group rules and appears to newcomers on their first visit.
- **Membership question.** Ask applicants to confirm they read the rules ([question examples](https://multiplegroupposter.com/blog/facebook-group-membership-questions/)).
- **Pinned post.** Pin a short rules post to the top of the group.
- **Tag rules in comments.** Facebook lets you tag one or more rules in a comment or post, so a reminder links to the exact rule.
- **Recurring reminder.** A monthly rules post through Admin Assist, so long-time members see changes.

## Enforcing rules without drama

1. **Name the rule.** When you remove a post, Facebook lets you select the rule it broke, and the member sees it. When you decline a pending post, choose the option to give feedback.
2. **Follow a ladder.** Remove with a note, then Limit Activity, then suspend, then remove from the group, then ban. Skip steps only for spam, scams and harassment.
3. **Same rule for everyone.** Friends, long-time members and big contributors included. Favouritism costs more trust than any single rule break.
4. **Keep it private.** Talk to the member by message, not in the thread.

The full escalation ladder, with the Facebook tool for each step, is in [Facebook group moderation tools](https://multiplegroupposter.com/blog/facebook-group-moderation-tools/#pillar-4).

## Rules that don’t work

- **“Admin’s discretion.”** It reads as arbitrary and invites arguments.
- **“No negativity.”** Members can’t tell criticism from negativity, and neither can moderators.
- **Twenty-line essays.** Nobody reads them. Keep each description to two or three sentences.
- **Rules you never enforce.** Each unenforced rule weakens the ones you do enforce. Delete it.
- **Rules copied from another group without editing.** Their “no politics” might not fit your town council group.

## FAQ

### How many rules can a Facebook group have?

Up to 10, according to Meta’s Help Center in October 2026. Each rule has a short title and a description. Most well-run groups use five to seven, because members remember them and moderators can point to a specific one when they remove something.

### How do I add rules to my Facebook group?

Open the group on a computer, click Group Rules in the left menu, then Get Started. Pick from Facebook’s example rules or write your own, and click Create. Drag the handle next to a rule to change the order, and use Options to edit or delete one.

### What are good rules for a Facebook group?

Rules that describe behaviour a moderator can see: no insults aimed at members, promotion only in the weekly thread, prices on every listing, stay on topic, no spam links. Add the consequence, such as removal then suspension, so members know what happens.

### How do I make members follow the group rules?

Make them visible and use them every time. Pin a rules post, include the rules in the new member intro, ask applicants to agree in a membership question, and name the rule whenever you decline or remove a post. Facebook lets you tag a rule in a comment.

### Should a Facebook group allow self-promotion?

Most groups do best with a middle path: no promotion in the main feed, and one weekly promo thread or promo day where members can share offers. Banning it completely pushes promotion into hidden DMs; allowing it everywhere turns the group into an ad board.

### Can I copy another group’s rules?

Use them as a starting point, then rewrite each one for your group. A rule only works if your moderators actually enforce it, so delete anything you don’t plan to act on and add the consequence you will use.

**Admin of several groups?** MultiGroupPoster doesn’t enforce rules. It posts your rules reminder or weekly promo thread to each group you pick, on a schedule, from your own browser. [See how it works](https://multiplegroupposter.com/facebook-auto-poster/).
