Quick answer

To moderate Facebook comments on a **Page**, block up to 1,000 keywords, turn on the profanity filter, and hide or delete what slips through. In a **group**, there is no keyword hiding: use Admin Assist to decline spam comments, keyword alerts to spot trouble, then Slow down comments, Turn off commenting and Limit Activity.

Key takeaways

- Pages and groups use different tools. Page tools (keyword blocking, profanity filter, hide) don't reach group comments, and the reverse.
- On a Page, keyword blocking takes up to 1,000 words, phrases or emoji and also catches misspellings like tr33 for tree.
- Hiding beats deleting for trolls: the author and their friends still see the comment, so they rarely notice and escalate.
- In a group, comment moderation is Admin Assist rules, moderation alerts, and per-post brakes: slow down, turn off commenting, limit one member.
- Outside tools such as NapoleonCat or Agorapulse moderate Page and ad comments only. Nothing outside Facebook can moderate group comments since April 2024.

## Pages and groups: two different comment toolkits

Most confusion about Facebook comment moderation comes from mixing up two systems. Settings were checked against Meta’s Help Center on 15 October 2026.

| | Facebook Page | Facebook group |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Keyword hiding | Yes, up to 1,000 keywords | No; keyword **alerts** notify you instead |
| Profanity filter | Yes | No |
| Automatic spam filter | Facebook’s own | Admin Assist **Spam comments** preset, Potential spam folder |
| Decline comments with links | No built-in rule | Admin Assist, for sites you name |
| Slow down or close a thread | Limit who can comment, where offered | Slow down comments (some groups), Turn off commenting |
| Limit one person | Hide, then ban from the Page | Limit Activity, suspend, remove, ban |
| Outside tools | Yes (Page APIs) | No (group API removed in April 2024) |

If you only run a group, skip to group comments. If you run both, set up each side separately.

## Page: block comments containing keywords

1. Click your profile photo, then **See all profiles**, and switch into the Page.
2. Click the Page photo, then **Settings & privacy**, then **Settings**.
3. Click **Followers and public content**.
4. Click **Hide comments containing certain words from your Page**.
5. Add keywords: type words or phrases separated by commas, click **Emoji** to add emoji, paste a list and press Enter, or choose **Options**, then **Upload from .CSV**.
6. Review the list. Facebook can show variations it found (click **Show Variations**) and lets you remove them so they don’t count.
7. Click **Save**.

What it does: when a comment contains a blocked word, Facebook hides it. You can add up to **1,000 keywords**, in any language, and Facebook automatically hides common variations such as misspellings, plurals, abbreviations and words written with numbers or symbols. Meta’s own example: blocking “tree” also catches TREE, t.r.e.e., tr33, treee and #tree.

Limits worth knowing:

- It works only on **content the Page created**. Comments on other people’s posts, or posts where the Page is a collaborator, aren’t affected.
- If you manage several Pages, copy the list from one Page with **Options** and paste it into the next.
- People with task access (rather than full Facebook access) set keywords in Meta Business Suite and can’t review the variations.

## Page: the profanity filter

In the same **Followers and public content** settings, turn on **Hide posts and comments with profanity**. Facebook decides what to hide from the words and phrases most often reported as offensive, so you don’t maintain the list. Use it together with your own keyword list: the filter covers swearing, your list covers spam phrases, scam terms and topics specific to your Page.

The same settings area holds **Show most relevant comments first** (comment ranking), which pushes low-quality comments down rather than hiding them. Comment ranking has to stay on to filter hidden comments, which the next section uses.

## Hide, delete, report or ban

| Action | Who still sees it | Use it for |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **Hide** | The author and their friends | Spam, trolling, bait. The author often doesn’t notice |
| **Delete** | Nobody | Personal data, threats, illegal content |
| **Report** | Goes to Facebook’s review | Anything against Community Standards |
| **Ban from the Page** | They can no longer comment on the Page | Repeat offenders |

To hide a comment on a Page post, hover over **Options** (three dots) next to it and click **Hide comment**; its replies are hidden too. To review what you, the profanity filter and your keyword list have hidden, open the comment filter at the top of the post (usually **Most relevant**) and choose **Hidden by This Page**. From there you can **Unhide**, or block or report the profile.

## What to put on your keyword list

Start with 30 to 50 entries and grow it from what you actually remove:

- **Scam phrases:** “DM me for”, “investment opportunity”, “whatsapp me”, “crypto recovery”, “check my profile”.
- **Competitor names and link shorteners**, if comment-spam links are your problem.
- **Slurs and insults** beyond what the profanity filter catches, in every language your audience uses.
- **Repeated spam emoji** combinations you keep seeing.
- **Personal data patterns** your audience posts by mistake, such as “my number is”.

Avoid blocking ordinary words that customers use when they complain (“refund”, “broken”). Hiding real complaints makes them louder elsewhere; answer them instead.

## Group: how to moderate comments

Groups have no keyword hiding, so the work splits into filters that act, alerts that notify, and brakes for one post or one person.

**Filters (Admin Assist):**

1. Open the group, click **Admin Assist**.
2. Under **Manage comments**, click **Add** next to **Decline comment if**, choose the **Spam comments** preset and click **Add to Admin Assist**.
3. Add another **Decline comment if** rule with **Create your own** for links to sites you name, and choose whether to tell the author why.

The [Admin Assist setup guide](https://multiplegroupposter.com/blog/facebook-group-admin-assist/) covers every rule, including auto-suspension after several removed comments in 24 hours.

**Alerts:**

- **Keyword alerts:** **Moderation alerts**, then **Settings**, then **Create** next to **Keywords**. No limit on the number of keywords. You get a notification, then choose **Ignore** or **Remove**.
- **Engagement alerts:** a notification when a post or comment passes a number of comments, replies or reactions within one hour.

**Brakes:**

- **Slow down comments:** one comment per person every five minutes on a post, in groups that have it. Admins and moderators can still comment.
- **Turn off commenting:** closes the thread. Admins, moderators or the post’s author can do it.
- **Limit Activity:** caps how many comments one member can post per hour, for a time you choose. Not available in every group.
- **Default comment order:** in **Group settings**, under **Manage discussion**, **Sort comments** sets the default order for the group.

Comments you never see also count: check the **Potential spam** folder, where you **Decline** or **Publish** each item.

## A heated thread, step by step

1. **An engagement alert fires.** Read the thread before acting.
2. **One neutral reminder.** A comment that tags the rule, for example “Reminder: disagree with ideas, not people”. Facebook lets you tag group rules in a comment.
3. **Slow it down** where your group has the option.
4. **Remove the personal attacks**, not the disagreement.
5. **Turn off commenting** if it keeps going, with one line saying why.
6. **Message the people involved privately.** Limit Activity or suspend if they repeat it.

Debates and escalation are covered in more depth in [Facebook group moderation tools](https://multiplegroupposter.com/blog/facebook-group-moderation-tools/#debates). The rule you point to should already exist; if it doesn’t, our [group rules templates](https://multiplegroupposter.com/blog/facebook-group-rules-examples/) have wording you can use.

## Your personal profile

Profiles get the same keyword blocking as Pages: **Settings & privacy**, **Settings**, **Followers and public content**, then **Hide comments containing certain words from your profile**, again up to 1,000 keywords. In the same place, **Who can comment on your public posts?** lets you choose Public, Friends or Friends of friends, for all public posts or for one post.

## Facebook comment moderation tools compared

| Tool | Where it works | What it adds |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Facebook keyword blocking + profanity filter | Pages, profiles | Free; up to 1,000 keywords with variations |
| Meta Business Suite Inbox | Pages, Instagram | Comments and messages in one inbox; automations such as Comment to message |
| Admin Assist + moderation alerts | Groups | Free; spam presets, link rules, alerts, auto-suspend |
| NapoleonCat, Agorapulse, Sprout Social | Pages, ads, Instagram | Shared inbox, auto-hide rules, team assignment, reports |
| Any outside tool | Groups | None. Meta removed group API access on 22 April 2024 |

The paid suites earn their price when you handle comments on ads, several Pages or clients. For a single Page, Facebook’s own settings are usually enough. For groups there is nothing to buy: [Facebook group management software](https://multiplegroupposter.com/blog/facebook-group-management-software/) explains what does and doesn’t work there in 2026.

## A 10-minute daily routine

1. **Page:** open **Hidden by This Page** on your busiest posts and unhide anything wrongly caught.
2. **Page:** add any new spam phrases to the keyword list.
3. **Group:** clear **Moderation alerts** and **Potential spam**.
4. **Group:** read member reports and the Admin Assist **Activity log**.
5. **Both:** reply to genuine complaints in public, then take details to messages.

If your own posts in other people’s groups get comments you want to answer later, that is the member’s side of the job; [first comment strategies](https://multiplegroupposter.com/blog/facebook-first-comment/) cover it.

## FAQ

### How do I moderate comments in a Facebook group?

Use Admin Assist to decline spam comments and comments linking to sites you name, keyword and engagement alerts to see trouble early, then the brakes on a single post: Slow down comments where your group has it, and Turn off commenting. Limit Activity caps one member’s comments per hour.

### How do I block words from comments on my Facebook Page?

Switch into the Page, open Settings & privacy, Settings, Followers and public content, then Hide comments containing certain words from your Page. Add up to 1,000 words, phrases or emoji and save. Facebook also hides common misspellings and variations of each word.

### What is the difference between hiding and deleting a Facebook comment?

A hidden comment stays visible to the person who wrote it and their friends, but no one else, so it rarely starts an argument. A deleted comment is gone for everyone. Hide spam and trolling; delete what breaks the law or Facebook’s rules, and report it.

### Can keyword blocking hide comments in a Facebook group?

Not the Page or profile setting: it only works on content you created on your Page or profile. In a group you use moderation alerts for keywords, plus Admin Assist rules and the spam presets. Group comments are moderated inside the group by its admins and moderators.

### Which tools moderate Facebook comments automatically?

For Pages, Facebook’s own keyword blocking and profanity filter, plus suites such as NapoleonCat, Agorapulse and Sprout Social that also cover ad comments and Instagram. For groups, only Facebook’s built-in tools work, since Meta removed group API access on 22 April 2024.

### How do I stop one person flooding the comments?

In a group, use Limit Activity to cap their comments per hour for a set time, or suspend them. On a Page, hide their comments, then ban the profile from the Page if it continues. On your personal profile, limit who can comment on your public posts to friends.
